Ronnie C Chan is chairman of the Hang Lung Group, which focuses on property development but also has interests in property management, car parks and dry cleaning. It was founded in 1960 by his father, Chan Tseng-hsi, with Ronnie taking over in 1991.

Chan is also a prolific philanthropist through his family’s Morningside Foundation, and is particularly famous for his contributions to education. In 2021, the foundation donated US$175 million to the University of Massachusetts Medical school, leading to its being renamed the UMass Chan Medical School. Past donations have included US$350 million to Harvard University’s School of Public Health and US$20 million to his alma mater, the University of Southern California (USC). Chan also provides financial assistance to underprivileged students at Chinese universities.

He founded the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society and is chair emeritus of the Asia Society and chairman of its Hong Kong Centre. Chan also serves as a director of the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong and is an advisor to the China Development Research Foundation of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, and Fellow of the AmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences.

A former non-executive director of the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong and founding chairman emeritus of the Asia Business Council, he is also a former member of the governing board of the World Economic Forum and a former director of Standard Chartered and Motorola.

In 2022, The “Hang Lung COVID-19 Relief Fund 2.0” was set up with an injection of over HK$13 million to support urgent pandemic countermeasures in Hong Kong and mainland China. Also this year, Hang Lung became the first real estate developer in Hong Kong, and among the first in Asia, to commit to ULI Greenprint’s net zero carbon operations goal, launched by the Urban Land Institute, the oldest and largest network of cross-disciplinary real estate and land use experts in the world.
