Embrace a clutter-free coffee experience at these cool hangouts where less is indeed more

The buzzword these days for café hunters is minimalist. More functional than fluffed up, the spaces are dominated by white or monochromatic walls, clean lines, and sensible furniture. As design starts to take more of a front seat in the restaurant industry today, we’re seeing a spike in eateries that please both the palate and the eyes.

Here are some of the coolest spots around the Klang Valley that focus on the bare essentials to hang with friends and grab a cuppa and pastry while you’re at it.

Located in the increasingly gentrified suburbia of Taman Paramount, this simple and no-frills café is just the place to get your caffeine fix—and they do it well. When the sun sets, trade coffee for cocktails. They have a fine selection of gin and wines.

The interior is simple, sleek and stylish with the walls painted black and a Crema Valencia marble countertop acting as the display unit and table for counter seating. Natural light fills the interior during the day. The rest of the space is embellished with items from lifestyle store Ilaika, which One Half is located in.

Niko Neko Matcha has become something of a household name in the matcha movement, so much so that bags of its matcha powder are now sold in supermarkets. It also has multiple locations dotted around the Klang Valley.

Aesthetically, its cafés opt for a stark and futuristic all-white interior. Think clean edges, geometric logos, and artsy display units. The tasteful lack of colours draws attention to the brightly hued matcha drinks and desserts.

Ōno serves up clever cocktails of coffee and matcha in a tastefully designed space in Petaling Jaya. Food-wise, Ōno subscribes to a Japanese-inspired narrative, serving Japanese-style sandos.

The ebi katsu taru taru sando and tangy chicken katsu sando are recommended, and its combination of matcha and coffee is a great order for those feeling adventurous.

The Hub Coffee Roasters prides itself on its Japanese minimalism concept that can be seen in all its outlets around the Klang Valley. There's something quite comforting about the clean lines and natural tones and it is a great place to get some work done.

It roasts its own coffee and offers more than 30 choices of beans of different origins. More interestingly, it produces its own evaporated milk that adds a nice smoothness and sweetness to your drink.

Nestled amongst rows of watches and other timepieces lies Peep Coffee, the caffeinated part of Vernakular Store along Jalan Telawi 3. It has designated seating areas for those who need a break from perusing and have some time for a treat or two.

Pebbles take the place of tiles on the ground of the café's seating area and the natural wood and unfinished concrete simply build up the space's unrefined, yet charming aura.
