Tokyo proves to be more than just a digital hub with these exciting art neighbourhoods

The Japanese city of Tokyo often observes throngs of wide-eyed tourists looking to shop, dine, and sightsee. The juxtaposition of tradition and modernity is apparent in the amalgamation of technology in the culture filled city. Likewise, the art scene in Tokyo also displays a variety of contemporary and traditional art.

Visitors to the Japanese capital are met with street art whilst strolling along popular districts. Head into museums and visitors will find ancient paintings protected behind glass. Art is ever-present in Tokyo, and if you’re planning an art-forced trip, here are some neighbourhoods where art is the main event.

1. Roppongi

Apart from its opulence, Tokyo’s upscale neighbourhood of Roppongi is where art galleries congregate, thanks to the Roppongi Art Triangle. The triangle consists of the three major art museums in the area, namely The Mori Art Museum, Suntory Museum of Art, and the National Art Centre, Tokyo. The presence of this artsy triangle has also influenced many art galleries to set up camp in the influential area.

Here, you will also find a selection of contemporary works by local and international artists in various mediums, including sculpture and painting, both protected by museums and displayed in art galleries.

Mori Art Museum

Situated in the iconic Roppongi Hills More Tower, the museum houses contemporary art and presents large scale exhibitions frequently, including the likes of Ai Weiwei, Tokujin Yoshioka, and Dinh Q. Lê. Visitors to the museum can also join guided tours and gallery talks of the latest exhibitions and delve deeper into the artworks displayed.

Suntory Museum of Art

The Suntory Museum of Art is where many traditional Japanese artworks lie. Home to some 3,000 cultural objects–ceramics, paintings, textiles, lacquerware–one of which, designated as a National Treasure by the Japanese government, expect the museum to house some of the richest Japanese antiques in the country.

The National Art Center, Tokyo

Designed by respected Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, the museum houses one of the largest exhibition spaces in Japan, accommodating numerous temporary exhibitions over the years, representing artists Henri Matisse, Shinji Ohmaki, Chi Guo-Qiang, and Makoto Shinkai. The museum is committed to its focus on contemporary art, presenting a variety of creative expressions and organising educational talks and workshops.

2. Ueno

A popular tourist area in Tokyo, Ueno is known for its bustling markets, shrines, a zoo, and a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring. The neighbourhood is also home to the oldest museum in Japan, The Tokyo National Museum. Accompanying the museum are its younger counterparts, dotted around the Ueno neighbourhood.

The elegant museum sits within the famous Ueno Park, housing a comprehensive collection of ancient and medieval Japanese art and numerous artworks and cultural objects from Asia. The museum is also the proud protector of 89 National Treasures. With such a rich collection of traditional artworks, expect to spend several hours marvelling at exquisite pieces.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

A stone’s throw from the Tokyo National Museum is the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The museum holds close to 300 exhibitions annually, collaborating with art organisations, local and international artists, and the general public. Dubbing itself as the “doorway to art”, the museum is a simple digest for a fun and artsy family outing.

The Ueno Royal Museum

Home to various works of art ranging from calligraphy to painting, the Ueno Royal Museum consistently presents temporary exhibitions by local and international artists, including the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition and the Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition.
